On the Move – tips

We’ve taken five trips across the United States via car. It’s a trip worth taking and I’d say add it to your bucket list. From coast to coast it was one of the most eye opening and coolest things I’ve done since eating Poprocks and Soda in school!

When gearing up for a large trip like this, whether it be for leisure, business or moving, there’s certain tasks that should be done for a better trip.

First is the planning. Now I get that some people are the “just get in the car and go” types. However, for all others, I suggest getting a general idea as to where you’re going, point A and B and back again if that’s needed. Google maps can show you which route to take, keeping in mind the up coming weather. Plan on what you are taking as far as clothing and/or house hold goods, the heavier the vehicle the less gas per mile you’ll get. You can go on AAA website and figure out about how much money gas will cost. Have your vehicle serviced prior. Join a hotel chain membership, some offer free night after a couple stays. Food and drinks is always needed on a trip, be sure to have a small cooler for drinks and chocolate! We like the cooler bags, takes up less room and easier to handle. Be sure, if taking animals, they have plenty of space, food and water. A lot of animals are used to traveling and probably wont eat much on the road, but try to give them food and water at every stop. Also, bring your pets favorite toy. We brought part of our cats scratching Tree, it screwed apart and fit nicely in the trunk.

Second: if you are moving and need to hire a moving company; Never hire a company called KLM Mover/Vanlines – we learned from experience. Get many quotes from at least 5 different companies. Have an inventory list to provide the movers. Ask them if they have a rep that can come view your items for an estimate. Make sure you tell them if there are stairs or a long walk to your locations, most companies charge extra. If you have to guess on how many boxes, guess a little high. Just so you know, they will call you every day until you make a decision. That is ok, just tell them you’re waiting for all the quotes. Most of the companies will give you an Estimate – not a firm quote. You should ask them what exactly is included and what is not. Ask them to provide a break down cost on what they charge once they come to pick up your items. Once they come to pick up your items, they will count and weigh your stuff and could charge more if estimate is low. Be sure to wrap, box and take everything by yourself because, Most will charge a high price, like KLM does, to use their boxes, tape and wrapping. You should ask them before they start removing items, what materials will they NEED to use and what is the cost. Most of the drivers that show up are contracted through the moving company and have different cost list of their materials to be used. Take picture of ALL your items before and after you pack them. Make sure everything is documented on a written list. Most movers wont properly document what items they remove, will just write down Box or Chair on their list. DON’T write on the boxes what’s inside. Only put what room they go in once arriving at the new place. Be sure to get extra insurance, they offer the basic and most times it’s by the weight of the item, which is never the true value. be sure to give an email and several phone numbers to the company. Ask them what how long is delivery times, most run late. Ask them if they are late, is there a reduction in cost. When your stuff arrives, be sure to inspect each item. Shake a box that says kitchen to make sure there’s no broken glass. Count, count and recount your items and be sure everything is there prior to the driver leaving. Enjoy unpacking, LOL.

Third, relax on your trip. It can take as little as 4 days to travel across country or as long as you want. Enjoy the time, take pictures, stop off at historical places. See where Diner Drive-ins and Dives ate or map out some museums if that your thing. Take lost of picture and share.

Finally; we hope you have an awesome summer and travel. Life is short, enjoy the one who gave it to you.

On the road again!

Number 5 alive. We’ll be hitting the road traveling across the good ole USA for the 5th time.

Along the way, as usual, we’ll be taking pics, rating hotels, restaurants and anything else that comes up.

Last trip we stayed with the Choice Hotel group. This trip La Quinta is on our radar. I hope they’re ready for us!

Follow along and have some laughs, tears and maybe, just maybe a little vomit!

Peace to the East!

B-Bye LA…for now

Going organic

Prior to having a double lung transplant  (the biggest surgery any person can have) my wife and I used to eat organic here and there. You know just to say we ate organic and try to trick our brains to think we did something healthy…not that we ate unhealthy a lot. However, after surgery we were told by the doctors and nutritionist to eat as much organic as possible.
Bottom line is they were trying to keep out any pesticides or foreign chemicals that would hinder the healing process or mess with all my medicine . We took heed to that suggestion, because the last thing you want is to find out something you ate made your body sick after having a $3M surgery!
We all know that eating healthy costs more. Organic foods are almost double what the non-organic food costs. Like bananas, organic from our store goes for  $.99 lbs, non-organic is $.59 lbs. Being that potassium was and is needed for me, we buy a lot of bananas. We also know that organic foods don’t last as long, the bananas I get can go bad after about 4 days, non-organic about week. So we buy only 4 or 5 bananas at a time. I bet by now you’re tired of me saying bananas! OK moving on.
The cost of organic is higher simply because the crops don’t yield as much and the farmers tend to have a lot smaller crops over all. Have you ever seen a fruit or vegetable grove that goes for miles? Those aren’t organic and they have to use a plane in some areas to cover the crops in chemicals to keep the bugs away. Certified Organic farmers don’t use those harsh chemicals. The bugs that attack the organic farms are smarter, since they don’t eat chemicals,  where is the other bugs that eat the chemical sprayed foods are more like the hippies from the 60’s. Lol just kidding
The same goes for eggs, milk, meats and packed foods. The choice to stay with this diet is flippen expensive, but the trade off is, knowing you’re eating better. For me, my body has been healing up well now. Not to say organic was the main factor, but I can say it certainly helps. By the way, organic milk tastes like it did when I was a kid.

Why am I posting this; it is because of the scare of listeria on the apples. Apples people! “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Hmm, not if it has a deadly bacteria. I don’t think I’ve heard of anyone getting sick from organic foods. But, it could happen. We wash all our fruits and vegetables prior to eating them, and so should you, regardless of where it comes from.

The best (in our opinion) fruits and vegetables come from a locally owned, organic farm. Because they know if they don’t produce good produce (did you see what I did there) they might find some of their cows tipped. Just kidding again. That actually hurts the cows, so don’t do it.

In closing, we all have choices to make when shoveling food in our pie holes, so do what you feel is right for you and enjoy!

Dangerous Vape

I’ve always said these e-cigarettes were harmful. Now with all these new studies coming out, I can say I was right!
For someone with a life long lung disease, walking past the kiosks in the mall with people blowing this smelling smoke (yes, smoke) in the air, made me walk far away. These should be banned from all malls, not just a couple here and there.
I once encountered a rude guy on a plane where he thought he could get away with puffing away while 20,000 feet in the air. After a brief encounter, the flight attendant stepped and told the man, “those are not permitted on a plane”. Which he gave me a disgusted look and sat back. As a side note, I was wearing surgical mask and also explained to him I had a lung disease. Some people!

So, next time you encounter someone who thinks they know better, and thinks these Vapes are ok, you now have proof to stand on.

Quaint little place and a very Chicago decor. Food was ok, not over the top great, but good enough to try. The locals seem to like it.

Shrimp (fried) tacos were ok, but not the best. Also had rice which was ok. The place was dirty for not being busy. There’s better places to go if not pressed for time

Ok, so I always try to visit a place at least twice before throwing something out there.

So, last night was the second time my wife and I visited here. The first time was for a breakfast burrito, which we drove around for like an hour before hand trying to find something on a Sunday morning. We stumbled on this little hole in the wall and loved our burrito.

So, last night we suddenly craved a burrito and we rushed back to this place and pleasantly we found both times we got exactly what we ordered and made perfectly.

Parking is a little tough, they have like 3 spots, but worth the trip and a nice place to sit on Sunset and chill with good food.

An Ode to My dad!

Golf balls, neck tie, Home Depot gift card, gift basket, fishing rod or colorful flowers are just not enough to show how much we appreciate our dad.

You know the saying, “my dad is better than your dad”? Well, that is in the eyes of the beholder. Some people don’t like their fathers or maybe their father has already passed away. But our dad is alive and kicking and I will say to anyone, my dad is better than your dad!

When a dad goes above and beyond to help you live better, then that’s a great dad. The life lessons he taught me at an early age are still with me today. Yes, he is not perfect in the eyes of all of humanity, but he has been perfect for us.

When I visited him recently in Hawaii it was plainly clear to me his “fathering” duties have not ceased one bit, as he took care of me when I got sick. As I was getting ready to go home, he had to change his shirt, out of the corner of my eye, I’m pretty sure I got a glimpse of his red cape tucked into his new shirt. superman

Black Angus Steakhouse & Chevy’s Fresh mex Restaruant

Blank Angus Steak house is a chain restaurant in only about 6 states. It was started by a Rancher that wanted a good, fun place to go and eat with friends. We will say this place was impressive to walk in to, with the wood columns, second story and large bar area. The dining room has multiple levels and a wide range of seating. We were greeted at the front by the Hostess, (no not the Twinkie maker) and were sat in a booth.
We were promptly greeted by the waiter and then the search began as to what to order. The menu had plenty of choices; from seafood to prime rib. The waiter returned with our drinks and warm bread and we ordered. Forbes got the NY Strip and Webb got the Sirloin with grilled Shrimp. After several laughs and some bread our food came. Yay!
Forbes NY Strip was thin and too much fat and over cooked. The baked potato was good size and prepared correctly. Her forearms got a work out from cutting the fat off! Her salad was good.
Webb’s Sirloin was too rare (ordered it medium rare), but flavorful. The mashed potatoes were Real potatoes. The broccoli came with slivers of parmesan cheese, but half of the cheese was on the side of the plate, very sloppy. The shrimp was on a small bed of wild rice, which is odd since mashed potatoes also came with the plate. There was a small cup of butter that was in the center of the plate, which had spilled over and got onto everything on the plate. For someone who doesn’t use butter, that was disappointing.

Overall we would rate this place a 5 out of 10. The atmosphere was nice, waiter was good, but the food is everything. It wasn’t the worst we’ve had, but wasn’t the best either.

Chevy’s Fresh Mex

It has been about 6 years since we stepped foot into a Chevy’s and not that because of a poor experience but due to locations. Chevy’s is owned by a large corporate that has many other chains and we could tell from the second we stepped foot in the place, things were different.
At the entrance there were several other customers just standing around with no Host or wait staff to help seat them. After a several minutes a waiter came from the dining room to seat us. It was noon on a Friday and the place wasn’t even half filled (or half empty for you pessimist).
When the chips and salsa came to our table, we commented on the salsa, because it was black. The waiter said it was grilled, Huh? Yeah, it tasted burn. It’s ok to have something different, as long as it tastes good, this however did not.
Forbes ordered Enchilada and a Tamale with rice and pinto beans. Webb ordered Mesquite-Grilled Chicken Tacos with black beans.
We noticed all the waiters had their own clothes on, no uniforms and one waitress was not dressed appropriately, unless she there was pole dancing at the bar or perhaps double as a piñata at a party later. We also noticed that the machine that makes the “home-made” flour tortillas wasn’t visible. Which we questioned, once we finally got some and tasted them, if they are still indeed made on-site.
Once our food arrived, we felt the presentation of the plates were horrible. Everything kind of ran into each other. Forbes cheese Tamale tasted like it was old for spoiled, the Enchilada was ok, but the pinto beans were more like chili and not good. The rice looks like it’s from a packet, there’s no need to put corn, pees and green peppers in the rice. Spanish rice is made with sautéed onions, rice and a quality tomato sauce, simmered to perfection. Boom!
Webb’s meal was less than desirable. Here is the menu description:
“It’s Taco Time! Two homemade, soft flour tortillas filled with grilled chicken, crisp lettuce, pico de gallo, chipotle aioli and cotija cheese”
However, what is served is two small tacos, basically salad with chopped up chicken, very little sauce and tasted horrible. Only could eat half of one taco. The black beans were good and the Spanish rice, well you already read about that.
When Forbes went to the bathroom to inspect it, it was very small and very dirty. When she asked a waitress if they had another bathroom, the waitress replied, Why? WTH the correct answer is yes or no!

It took a long time to get our check and we reluctantly paid and left, only to have stomachaches later.
